Many believe that the iconic red suit of the modern-day Santa Claus was created by Coca-Cola, transforming him from his original green outfit that was associated with St Nicholas, evergreen trees and the symbol of life and renewal during the winter season .

Undeniably, Coca-Cola campaigns captured the public imagination and brought the sight of the jolly, red robed Santa to the masses in the 1930’s but, in fact, his original appearance in red attire can be traced back to the 19th-century illustrations of the prolific political cartoonist, Thomas Nast.

Nast’s illustrations of Santa, created during the 1860s and 1870s, depicted a plump, bearded man with a jovial demeanour. His Santa was often featured in a red suit, a departure from earlier images that showed Santa in different colours, including green, blue, or brown.

It’s amazing how quickly a story can take hold even when not entirely accurate.
