The Shard, in London, is the tallest building in the European Union; standing at an imposing 309.6 metres (1016ft) tall. Arguably more impressive is the tower crane that was used in its construction. The giant steel structure stood at 317 metres (1040ft) when the building was completed in 2012. In order to reach the top of buildings these cranes have to grow themselves… Separating below the slewing arm, with the use of hydraulic rams, the crane operator hoists and then positions a new 6 metre section into the ‘neck’ of the mast, the arm is then fixed into position 6 metres higher than before.
